Day One App Reviews

A big disappointment

I loved DayOne Classic and quickly got the upgrade when it became available only to discover a significant function I used, sharing of a complete journal entry via FaceBook/Twitter etc., had been removed. It means, to give journal updates to friends and family of my travels (including the charity I am involved with) I have had to find a new application to do my journaling. It seems incomprehensible that, 8 months after the release of version 2, there is still no adequate sharing mechanism. I feel ripped off.

Excellent. Have it on iPad, iPhone, MacBook Pro, and Mac. Excellent

Excellent Writing Application

Day One is my go-to application when I want to get words down on paper, digitally speaking. The new update, which allows you to categorize your different writing avenues, is a smart improvement.

A completley wonderful evolution of an App that I use every day

UPDATE: 2.1.1 - This continues to be an excellent and solid application. I have used it for years now and continue to recommend it a a standard app for all iOS and macOS users. It is just clean, easy to use, full of aweome features, and support Markdown which is brilliant. I can add things fast as well and each entry has tons of information many details that the app provides. Coolest is the location and weather which really helps tell teh story. UPDATE: 2.0.9 - I keep discovering new and cool features. I love this product. ALL Mac users should get it. I have 0 issues and faults and have many many entries in the thousands. UPDATE: 2.0.7 - I like the new feature that tells you what happened this day in the past. I continue to use the App daily. UPDATE: 2.0.6 - This is another solid release for one of best made apps on the app store. UPDATE: 2.0.4 - I am confused. I have been using Day One for a long time now. I have thousands of entries with pictures/tags/location/… details created with markdown syntax and 0 issues of any kind SYNC works since I use this on iOS as well. I haven’t had a single problem and continue to love this App. Based on my volume of data, frequency of use, and push of cool features; I would suspect that I would have found a problem by now. But I haven’t. Nothing. I say this because I see some odd reviews that do not line up with my experience. DropBox is not well supported but the cloud sync provided by Day One works flawlessly so Drop Box is just not needed. I continue to be extrememly happy. Although this release is a small evolution it shows the Day One team wants to continue to evolve this product. UPDATE: 2.0.3 - Such a cool list of new power features. Day One 2 continues to rock in all ways possible. Now I can export in JSON formats which is really cool and will allow for export and transformation. I continue to find no fault in this modern and well thought out application. It continues to be used by me daily and I think ALL people should use it as well. It is inexpensive and very productiity driven. UPDATE: For those of you who have NOT upgraded from the Classic Day One to “2” version, you are seriously missing out. I find myself adding more entries through-out the day due to the thoughful improvements made to the “quick entry” widget in the notifications area. The old one worked nice but the new version is a night-day impovement and acts as a “mini Day One” app. I continue to feel extremely happy with this release and truly understand the need to upgrade. I have had zero issues of any kind, not even petty stuff running on a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. UPDATE: IF you work with the Photos app and Day One, this new version lets you use the new “side by side” feature in OS X. I love it because I can ealy drag/drop picture into a journal entry. This continues to show the excellent usability of this app. It continues to be my favorite and most consistently used app. It has not let me down and is an excellent evolution in the successful history of this product. Syncing works perfectly. I use Day One’s sync service which has worked without any issues on iOS and OSX. Be sure to look at the keyboard shortcuts. There are many and they are very handy to increase productivity. 0% issues 100% awesome. UPDATE: I keep finding all this cool stuff. Like now you can pop a new journal entry into a separate window and there are a lot more quick and easy options. An already beautiflul and wondeful update keeps getting more beatutiful and more wonderful. I installed this the day it was released on both iOS and OSX. The install and migration of entries from the Classic version to this version was easy. An easy to follow wizard walks you through the steps. Be aware that the initial sync may impact the performance of the app initially on older systems (like I have) but that goes away after the sync is complete (5 minutes tops) I love the new interface. The common things are where you expect them to be but the look and feel has been massively refreshed. Everything is even easier to use. My favorite change is the new widget in the notification area. You can now tag and fully manage entries quickly without having to launch and touch-up details in the fully app. Sync with iOS works perfectly and I have had no issues of any kinds. For those of you on the fence on upgrading, just do it. This evolution is well worth the upgrade price and the benefits overshadow the cost. This continues to be my favorite App I use and I am extremely happy for the development team who delivered such a fine and useful product.

Has become a necessary part of my day

I started using day one years ago, and have not always been good about the discipline of journaling. About a month ago I got serious about wanting to capture what I was learning and thinking so I could be more present and organized. Day One has been invaluable because it’s a tool that gets out of the way and lets you write. It just works, it’s always there, and looks beautiful. I know have a bullet journal for what I’ve done & learned at work each day. I have a journal for each of my children so I can easily capture their milestones and funny quotes, and I have a fourth journal to bullet out things I want to remember from each book I read. These journals give me an always with me place to capture thoughts, and has powerful features letting me grab photos or calendar items when on my phone. This is the best journaling app I’ve ever used, and I’ve tried a number.

Great journaling app

This is a great jouranling app that just keeps getting better. The only feature I would still like to see added would be an ability to link one entry to another.

disappointing

I have loved this app. The sync is terrible and confusing. Very sad. I gave it two stars rather than one in hopes that they can straighten things out.

No iMac syncing!

Under the “Classic” Day One, I could sync using Dropbox. Completely reliable. With Day One 2.0, I had to buy a new version that requires using Day One’s sync server, which stopped working about a week ago. Now, my iMac Day One app no longer syncs with my iOS devices. The Day One website claims that their sync servers are running and performing “great.” Are they kidding?

One of my favorites

This is one of my all-time favorite Mac apps, and definitely the best I’ve used for journaling! It’s very streamlined, but still has lots of useful features (I love the calendar!). I primarily use it as a backup for my written journals, but it’s also great as a travel journal + keeping track of things on the go. 2.0 has gotten a lot of flack, and I think that’s unfortunate (and undeserved). I’ve found it to be a great upgrade. There have been a few bugs here and there, but nothing major, and honestly, that just comes with the territory. The developers have been SO helpful + are working hard to make improvements create fixes as needed. It’s a LITTLE pricier than I’d like, but I haven’t regretted my purchase whatsoever. Really solid app.

Version 2 has so many more features than Version 1

V2 is definitely worth the upgrade. After using it for so long, I wanted multiple journals, and now they are here. There are still a few minor missing features from V1 like publishing that I didn’t use much, and a few minor issues getting fixed but nothing that would detract from 5 stars.

Great Update

I love the new major release. It was definately worth paying for it. With the new multiple journals feature I was able to separate one journal into two and add a third one I had kept elsewhere. I also find it much easier to review my existing entries with the dual pane feature. While, I rately use it, the process of adding photos and seeing them is greatly improved. The main advantage is that I write more than I used to because I like the app that much better.

New and Improved Version

Ok, I have been a Day One Classic user since 2013. Today, I upgraded to the new version. I was a little apprehensive since I have been journaling since 2013. I reached out to support and communicated with “Dallas”. The purchase and transfer went as smooth as he described. After the purchase, I pushed the download button and the transfer steps were easy and everything went perfect. I fell in love with this program since 2013. If you are looking for a personal journal, Day One is the best one. I looked at many other journal programs and Day One killed it! Thank you! Please dont change your customer support. This is so worth every penny. So far, so good!

Flexible and Multi-talented app

The latest release of this journal app made my day. I have many interests in my life and I like to journal about them. Now I can keep a journal for work and personal. I also keep one for my photography notes. It’s nice to snap a main picture of where I’m at, add some notes, and refer back to them when I’m cataloging things on my computer or processing through those photos. Now, if they could get an app up and running for the PC, that’d be a bonus. I use both Apple and PC products.

Awesome App Just Got Better

I was excited when Day One 2 was announced, but it was missing a couple of things I needed from Day One Classic. But sure enough, they are developing and releasing updates constantly. The day they announced IFTTT integration, I bought the app on both Mac and iOS. I think it looks better than the old app (which was also good), it has better encryption thanDropbox and iCloud, you can now have multiple journals, and everything syncs much faster. I can’t find a single aspect of the app that falls behind Day One Classic. They have clearly put a lot of work into this release. If you look at the negative 1 and 2 star reviews, almost all of them are about the removal of iCloud or Dropbox sync. But there are many benefits to using Day One sync. First, you don’t use up your iCloud or Dropbox storage. The Day One storage is free! I don’t know about everyone else, but I have a lot of data in my Day One journal. Second, as I mentioned before, the encryption is far better than iCloud or Dropbox. In an age where everybody is trying to get your data, this is a huge benefit. Third, I think it is faster. I think Dropbox is pretty fast, but iCloud is certainly not as fast. I would be more concerned about losing my data from iCloud than from Day One as well. If you are worried about syncing to Day One sync, you might want to rethink the benefits. Change happens, and sometimes it is for the better. This is an awesome app. You don’t need to use any publishing features if you don’t want to. Solid and active developers like Bloom Built are worth supporting.

Arabic words showing up in UI

After the recent update, I’m seeing Arabic words popping up in the UI, please fix this

I do not read Arabic

Arabic is in everyone of my entries - please correct.

Going back to Previous Tool

I’ve been both a DayOne Classic and DayOne 2 buyer, and I like the look and feel and capability of DayOne 2. But today I have exported and deleted my information. I am leaving DayOne for the following reasons: 1) Continued Absence of Dropbox Syncing 2) I just don’t trust Built-in Sync and a lack in privacy controls - such as not being able to control encryption before uploading. While others may like the social media features, I am just looking for a way to have a personal journal that can be used both on my Mac and IOS devices. These are private and not things I wish share. I have now gone back to using a previous application that I used before going to DayOne Classic over a year ago and DayOne 2 when it came available.

Arabic showing up in various places

I’ve been using Day One for years, and over all I really like it. But there are moments when it frustrates me, like today when it appeared that a lengthy entry I wrote recently had disappeared. Luckily the entry wasn’t gone. Instead a blank entry had somehow made its way into my timeline on the same day as the entry I was looking for. My eyes saw the date I was looking for with a blank entry next to it, so I panicked. Then I spent the rest of the day feeling blue because I thought Day One had let me down by losing the contents of one of my entries. I was relied to find that the post hadn’t been deleted, but that was after I exported all my entries to a plain text file. Looking through the plain text file I could clearly see the entry I thought had gone missing, yet my eyes didn’t see the same entry looking at the Day One timeline. And that’s why I give it a 4-star rating. That reason, and the Arabic that is showing up in the weather info and next to the Sync Now button in Preferences.

Very Handy Tool

I love this app. Yep, this new version has a couple of minor bugs, but this team has a great track record and I know it will continue to get better and better. I’m just scratching the surface of the potential here.

Great app, but has issues

I updated from the original Day One and like the look of the new version. The Day One sync works perfectly. The problem is that every time I start Day One on my iMac, I get a message that “Day One quit unexpectedly.” Then I try again and it opens. I sent a message to Day One support and a week later I got an email asking me if I was still experienceing the issue in Day One 2.0.3. (For the record I am.) Day One is a great app but they seem to have issues with fixing little problems.
