Day One App Reviews

Disappointed!

The price is much too high for this upgrade. I thought I may get the 50% launch discount but that did not happen. I paid full price. Strangely, when the app appears on the Mac App Store Preview, the displayed price is $10 less than what I paid. The only thing I like about this upgrade is the multiple journals feature. The interface is less readable, less elegant and less intuitive. The unchangeable fonts (like fonts for the dates and other built in text) are too light, too small, harder to see. I don’t sync my journals so that particular change is not an issue for me. I love the previous version of Day One and I am keeping it for my main journal and now that I bought this, will plan to keep on using it for various notebooks. Well, I suppose you can’t please everyone. There are quite a few positive reveiws on this app, so hopefully most people are happy.

Bring back iCloud support

Ok we get it, you are really happy with your new cloud service. However you should still give your users the option of using iCloud over your own service. I have been a Day One user since 2013 with zero issues while using iCloud sync across multiple devices. Now I am forced to create yet another account, which in your eyes is more secure, but in my eyes it is one more service that could eventually be hacked.

Feature and Design backpeddle

I really enjoyed the first iteration, however this was not worth the price. The design elements can’t breathe due to clutter and it actually effects my writing. I have to write in a different client and copy and paste into this one. Not that impressed with the writting pane.

A real treat to use and to look at

Just upgraded to Day One 2.0 both Mac and iOS. Change-over process very fast, synch excellent. Good to be able to have multiple journals. Thank you.

features deleted no forewarning

security fell down to their own server, big step down, no security fell off a cliff features were dropped altogether, I mean basic features like their tagging system with hashtags Clutter was added So I bought both osx and IOS and use neither and now I’m just hoping they are late to drop the original version. I hope I have time to find an alternative program. any Suggestions? Something like their version 1.

So close to five stars

I’ve been a fanatical user of Day One for sometime. I was anxiously awaiting the new version after hearing about the ability to post multiple pictures to a journal entry. That feature really enticed me to upgrade. I love that new feature by the way. It works great. I have also really grown to love the ability to have multiple journals. That’s a feature I didn’t realize I’d use and now I wouldn’t want to do without it. I am indifferent regarding the forced move to Day One servers for the sync feature. I’m hoping this is a more secure method of backing up and syncing compared to the other options. At least that is what Day One seems to suggest. So I’m very positive on Day One 2. However, and here’s where I’m really annoyed, I cannot believe Day One got rid of the “year ago today” feature in notification centre. Now there is a useless option to start a new entry in its place. I do not anticipate using that feature at all, whereas I used to start every morning by checking what happened a year ago in my journal. So a big boo hiss from me on deciding to change how Day One works with notification centre….Otherwise Day One 2 is really great.

Great program

It took awhile to get used to the new version but once I got the hang of it things went well. I begin each day by taking a photo of an island in the lake I live on. It becomes my “weather pic” for the day. It’s so easy to transfer that photo from my iPhone directly to Day One and have it pop up on the correct day in my journal. With the capacity to enter as many as 10 photos in an entry this and the other photos I take during the day help bring life to my text in one nice clean entry. Little is mentioned about a journal being a health resource. I use Day One to keep track of my weight, my meals and snacks and general health. I also keep track of some fitness activity to supplement what is recorded on my iPhone and Apple Watch. Having kept a daily journal for over two years it gives me a daily boost to look back at what I did on the same date last year and two years ago. I did have a couple of problems with the upgrade to version 2. The staff at Day One could not have been more supportive and helpful with these glitches. I do wish though that Day One 2 had a comprhensive on-line Users Guide and video tutorials. The on-line help that’s provided now is a bit of a mish mash. Nonetheless this excellent program still merits 5 stars.

Looks great. 2.0.1 is a crashy release

After the third crash in 10 mintues I have given up until the next release.

Thanks!

Thanks for fixing the bug with the update in 2.0.4! Genuinely love the new app!

Too cluttered

While I really like the multiple journals and Day One sync (works much better than iCloud) the interface on the desktop is super messy and cluttered. I would have just stuck with the iOS version but I thought it’d be nice to have the desktop version for typing longer entries. I regret my decision and would reccomend sticking with just the iPhone version.

My Life is in This App

I have been excessively giddy about this latest version of this App. The addition of multiple notebooks has been excellant and has enabled me to contain most of my creative pursuits into one neat App. It’s quick and easy to add something to the App (and the companion iPhone app), the sync is fast, the App is well layed out and all the little extra things like the map that shows where you wrote an entry is great, what music you were listening to when you were writing, if you were walking or sitting. It’s all gravy. I would love the addition of voice memos somehow, like allowing attachment of voice memo files from iPhone’s native app, but maybe that would bog down the sync part of things. Nit picks, in case any of the developers get any ideas from these reviews. • It’s great that the calendar highlights a day in the colour of the notebook you wrote in, but when you’ve written into more than one notebook it marks the day as black. Nit picky, I know. • I’m used to calendars being represented as moving forward through the months as you scroll down (so that the most recent month be at the bottom). DayOne does the opposite. • More colour options for notebooks.

This diary apps is the best for syncing between device

Love this apps because it sync between my cellphone and laptop and also iPad. features are good too but i think i prefer Momento apps better. The only problem with Momento is it doesn’t sync between my macbook and cellphone. Diary One will be the best if it allow video or facebook syncing too

Love it, and keeps getting better

I have been a long-time fan of Day One, for its attractive simplicity, the use of Markdown, the journal prompts. Day One 2 is a fantastic leap forward, too (and long overdue): a separate syncing system, multiple journals, and soon, end-to-end encryption. Although it’s not here yet, that has always been a barrier for me: how intensely personal do I really want to journal if it is readable in plain text by anyone who gains access to my computer, my Dropbox, or maybe even my wire traffic? Grateful for this app and the love of daily journalling it is helping to rekindle.

A new fan

I had never extensively used a journaling app before. When I did my research Day one was what most people raved about. I tried the Day One 2 app first and loved it a week later I went for the Mac software. What can I say I use it several times a day…I never thought I would be so into capturing my musing but this software makes it fun and a breeze.

I love Day One

It allowed me to be more disciplined in writing a diary. I love the tags and the multiple journal. It improved my life...

Best app in my life

I could say that this is the best journaling app around, which is true, but beyond that, it’s the best journal – period. Quickly pull out your phone from anywhere to capture and record a moment, or get more reflective from your iPad or Mac. I’ve been using this app for about 4 years now and have accumulated 1200 journal entries and wouldn’t give it up for anything. Easily worth $1200.

Great Journal

This app is great. The layout is very simple and easy to use. I really like the ability to have multiple journals. Highly recommend it.

Love It

This is a wonderful App for documenting your life on a daily basis. There is so much information contained in the App to allow you to record daily details of your activities, opinions and life experiences. Adding photographs and places on maps puts the icing on the cake. My only wish would be the ability to add more designated activities.

Its a well made app with tons of features...

It doesnt do everything that one could ever dream of, but its a pretty deep app that you can customize extensively to suit your own particular needs and preferences. I quite like it. Is it worth 40$? Well, if youre serious about keeping a journal, this is pretty much the app for that. Im using it every day morning and evenings and I think its pretty solid value. YMMV, but I was quite happy to pay it because I want them to keep developing the app. Im pretty picky about stuff in general, but this is a top-notch app. There really isnt anything broken or bad about it, as far as Im concerned. Its a solid Mac app (with a solid iOS companion app, although I use that one a whole lot less).

Day One 2

Ive been using Day One for a long while now, having migrated from MacJournal. This new version actually took a bit to get used to. Theres something about the aesthetics of the original I prefer. However, the ability to have multiple journals, rather than just categorize journals via tags is really nice, and while theyve ditched external syncing options for their own, (a reason Ive held off moving my personal journals to the new app until their key encryption gets implemented), the syncing is MUCH MUCH faster. The accompanying iOS apps also handles syncing better. Its also nice to be able to add more than one photo, and while I dont do it often, the days I want to, it always drove me a little nuts with the old app that I couldnt. Bulleted lists dont indent like it did on the original either. Its a personal preference, but I like my lists indented more too. Which just goes to show you how good the app is, since Im nitpicking indentation of lists. Solid app, great for everyday writing, and I literally use it, everday. Updated: July 20, 2016 Still a great app, Im still holding off moving my personal journal from the original Day One as they still havent implemented the End-to-End encryption, but I know theyre hard at work on it. Until then, Day One 2 will continue to house my training journals and other non-sensitive writing.
