Day One App Reviews

The best just got better

It was nearly perfect before. Now it’s even more perfect. A fabulous programme.

Nice, but sync not working

Wonderful new features, but the app uploads, on and on, to no avail: only 66 out of 604 entries are synced. And the ipad version makes a mess of everything, creating duplicate journals. A fix is BADLY needed. update: sync problem was fixed. Works like a charm. update on 2016_03_11 : after a fix, sync is down again. Disappointing. Do not buy this version, that forces you to use their unreliable server. update on 2016_03_31 : back again. One really needs to be patient...

No Dropbox nor iCloud

Well, shame on me. I should have read the details before paying the price. I don’t fell that DayOne Synce is private enough to sync my files through it and this version does not support other sync servers. From my point of view, they should not have released a version without this features in respect to DayOne Classic user like me. I won’t be able to use this version until they add other sync engines.

Extremely Disappointed

I loved DayOne Classic, but some improvements were really necessary. However, I did not wonder that Day One 2.0 would had a so disappointing syncing system…I upload my photos using Iphone and can’t see them neither in iPad nor in Mac. In the previous version, it was almost automatic, probably due to Dropbox, extremely effective to sync photos. PLEASE, FIX IT ASAP!!! OR, AT LEAST, ALLOW DROPBOX AND ICLOUD AS SYNCING ALTERNATIVES...

No Dropbox -No iCloud . No Stars

I am not sure if the developer reada the German comments so here they are in English. Without Dropbox, iCloud and others it is not worth the investment. By now we should have seen this feature which was available in the earlier version. I can see where this is going… Monthly or annual fee.

Great app but lacks in data privacy

I love DayOne as a diary app, both on my Mac and on my iPhone. But since version v2 I am forced to use their sync servers to store my data in the cloud. They claim the data records are encrypted and they can not have access to it - only I need to trust them. Still I have a bad feeling in my stomach, since personal diary data is quite personal and should be kept secret against everyone. They promised with release of 2.0 to develop data record encryption by optional use of the users own private key, which would truly keep all unauthorized people out, but up to know they have not delivered. Therefore I will continue to look at an alternative, competetive app, and then I will move away from DayOne. Really pity, since DO is a phantastic app, stable and with great features. Just (5.Aug.16) saw your announcement on Facebook confirming you are working on full end-to-end encryption. That gives me some hope I can stay with your product. Once it is delivered and I am satisfied, I will upgrade my rating to full 5 stars!

New

I love the new interface, I love the multiple Journal options and I really appreciate the ease of migration from Day One Classic to Day One 2.

excellent app, great new features

This is an app I’ve been using for several years every day. Its now even better than before : syncing is seamless; interface clean, and the whole app just feels more powerfully featured and therefore even more useful than the classic version.

OMG!

I only have great things to say about this app! Buy it now! Journalling, notes, ideas, picture book, you name it. Wow!

Amazing

Instabuy. An invaluable app and so well done!

way too High upgrade cost for TAKING AWAY FEATURES!

NO Icloud sync, and only view thumbnail format..bad update !!! I do Like the old Day One app, which would allow you to click on the picture to enlarge it and really get a good look and also use your iCloud account for syncing….But in this new version you can only use their cloud (sketchy and unknown security for my personal information and thoughts!) and it keeps image view in basically medium size thumbnail format. To great extent I can see the benefits of much of the OS, but it really is sad that you can no longer sync to Apple iCloud and you only get small images to look at, when often a memory should allow for a larger view. Basically, I wish that it had the option to sync with a company that spends millions in cloud security, as opposed to an app developer who does not, and therefore I feel that ,my personal info is soooo much less secure on their cloud service, and also the old feature allowing you to highlight images and then see them full screen if you desired is also lost to the new version. YIKES…CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK!?!>?!?! For as much money as this is I hope they can make ICLOUD SYNC AND LARGER IMAGE VIEWS possible in later versions. If so I could see this being a five-star app. Unfortunately, until you can keep the sync on a proven secure cloud (iCloud) and also view your images from the past in a larger format, and not merely tiny thumbnails, my review will stand at one star.

Seamless Transition

I was a little skeptical, but have decided it was well worth the investment for the redesigned app. Looking forward to seeing what features future updates will bring. The transition of data from the classic app couldn’t have been easier, and now all of my photos look great in the new layout for Mac. I rarely buy desktop apps for Mac, but Day One is by far my favourite!

Bring back iCloud sync please

I am a long term user of DayOne since beginning of ver 1.0. I love the new look, the idea of multiple journals (reason I decided to give ver 2. a try), UI is OK, encryption is OK. Own sync service -no. To be honest, I don’t see a strong reason to upgrade from previous version especially when you consider the big price gap (more than 5 times in Canada from previous version, partially because of the currency exchange rate changes since 2011). The biggest down side of ver.2 is they dropped iCloud sync service. I don’t want to open a new account every time I start using a new app or new service. Please bring back iCloud sync. I would give 3stars for the high price for upgrade and lack of iCloud sync.

Wonderful!!!!!

I just love it: multiple journals, multiple pictures, and everything else. If you are serious about keeping a journal (or more) this app is the best! A nice upgrade from Day One Classic.

Nice Interface and Multiple Photos but...

… they crippled the photo view by making the photos smaller and not expandable. Much preferred the old larger size photo on the entries and I hope they fix this.

privacy concern

Pros: UI Design Multiple journals Cons: Less sync options (Day one sync is the only option) No encryption IMO, the most important thing for a journal app is PRIVACY, I do not wanna write my diary on a un-secure place even it’s a beautiful notebook.

Great update to an already stellar app

While at first I was a little sceptical about spending more money for an upgrade of an app I already own, I decided it was worth it because I love Day One so much, and it’s one of the few apps I use every day. I’m not disappointed. Being able to add multiple photos to an entry is essential, the photo viewer and calendar are handy, the maps are beautiful and the UI is nicer — and thats saying a lot, because the interface of the first Day One was already one of the best. I created a new Day One account for syncing and it works great — I don’t care if it syncs through iCloud or Dropbox or whatever, as long as it works. And the new method of syncing through a Day One account means you’re able to integrate other services, such as IFTTT. I know that there are lots of other features that I’ll enjoy exploring when I have more time, but I’m already satisfied. It’s clear that Bloom Built put a lot of thought and effort into this update.

Forced to use "DayOne servers »

Goodbye synchronization through iCloud or Dropbox. It said it is in order to provide a better service to the users. Right! OK! Thanks! Just read the Privacy Policy when you sign in. I’m not paranoid, but thanks but no thanks Bloom Built. I might miss on new features but I won’t be using Day One 2. “Personal Information” in this Privacy Policy refers to information that allows someone to identify or contact you. Examples of Personal Information include your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, as well AS ANY OTHER NON-PUBLIC INFORMATION ABOUT YOU that is associated with or linked to any of the foregoing information.(and that is just the beginning !)

Worht Upgrading

Day One v2 for OS-X and it’s companion iOS app are significant upgrades and well worth thei cost, especially duing the ½ price introductory offer. The fact is, there were numerous no-charge upgrades over the years since v1 launched and eventually a bottom-up rebuild was necessary. App developers shouldn’t be expected to work years for nothing. Here’s part of what we are paying for - but also lots of new features: - capacity to have up to 10 journals [previously only one] - multiple photos for any day [previously only one] - improved synching that could only be achieved by taking control of the process [third party synching via third parties was previously flakey leading to lost posts]. Think of it in the same way Apple maintains control of the OS to ensure things “just work”. FWIW, another top-ranked [financial] app I use also went to proprietary synch because relying on third parties just doesnt work over time - new fonts and a beautiful double-panel interace worthy of its place on a Mac - more shortcuts that make journalling easier and more pleasant. Some users have reported issues trasnitioning to v2 but my experience was flawless. The new app installed on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook without issue and my old journal copied-in perfectly. I was then able create and new journal for specific posts and, using the old tags, move the entried to their new home. All of it proceeded problem free. Day One has long been one a leading app for ease of use and looking excellent while getting the job done. Version 2 builds on that tradition.

Excellent upgrade!

This is a huge upgrade from the earlier version, with a lot to make it attractive. I don’t understand the complaints, but there seem to be always three: 1. Sync solution. Everyone wants Dropbox or iCloud storage back, citing that the journal is using some proprietary, unproven sync solution. If you look around, you’ll learn Day One sync is built on Amazon AWS sync platform. If you think AMAZON’S server infrastructure is unproven, then you should stop shopping. The thing is solid. Add to that, they’ve promised private-key encryption in the near future, and when that happens, you’ll be more secure than you ever were on Dropbox OR iCloud. 2. Picture size Yes, the pictures store at a lower size than in Day One 1.0. Are you upset because they’re smaller or because you can’t use them, because really, this trade-off for smaller images in exchage for up to 10 per entry is trivial. The pictures render in Day One for me at over 1000 x 1000 pixels. How big do you need them onscreen? On my iPad, they render as brilliantly as they ever have fullscreen. Nevermind the fact that it’s perfectly possible (might even be by default) that you keep any full-res versions in your Photos library anyway. I have have a 27” 5K iMac, arguably one of the larger screens out there, and they’re plenty big enough for me. If I wanted to print these images, I could still do a nice 5x7 no worries. Not that I would because if I wanted a photo, I’d use the one in my photo library. If you want to print the text and photos, The PDF renders the images I take out of my iPhone at 4x3 inches, and they print fine. 3. Cost. This is an independant software shop. A handful of people create software that rivals and in some ways surpasses Apple’s own in-house software solutions. They create a tool that when properly used reaps countless benefits. You think 70 bucks is too much for a cross-platform, unlimited storage, redundantly backed-up, constantly improving way to document your lives? You must not think much of your memories. This software earns its cost, and the people who create it deserve to be supported. They are a dedicated team who keep improving the product and are responsive to their customers. I know some things aren’t worth the price, but for my money, this is not one of them. For those of us who genuinely love to keep track of their lives for whatever reason, this is well worth the cost. And no, I don’t work for Bloom. I have been a daily, satisfied user of Day One for over three years. I haven’t had any real issues with the software, and the one time I mentioned something strange in a tweet, they were right there to help with a solution. They didn’t go SaaS, they respect your data, and they create pretty, useful, relevant apps. I promise you, I do not advocate lightly. A piece of software needs to really earn it from me. Day One is one of few that absolutely does.
