Day One App Reviews

Dayone Useful for Work Documentation

I first bought this app for my phone. I liked it so much I invested in the Mac app. It was a little pricey but it made writing and reviewing journaled work easier. I don’t use it as much as I could but for the times I do, it works flawlessly. I use this mostly for my work in documanting expenses and other noteworthy things that will allow me to recall the infomration that I entered and the time of day, location, location and weather. Recommend for anyone who needs to document information for later use.

Solid App

I like Day One (Two). I like being able to keep separate journals on differnet subjects. I like being able to search all journals at once for any keywords, even if I didn’t specificaly tag the entry (sometimes I forget). I don’t like that I had to purchase the app three times — for the computer, for the iPhone and for the iPad. That added up to a chunk of change. I wish they would have given one of the apps for free if you purchased the more expensive one. Oh well. It’s a solid application. Buy it. You will like it.

Day One is Perfection!

I love Day One! I have been a user for years and now I am able to look back on my life and smile.

Greatly improved. Excellent for business and personal journals

I love that I can now keep separate journals for business and personal entries. The tags also work great. So I can keep track of a number of business issues and see a timieline of how these issues progress over the weeks, months, and years. Also love that I can now post more than one picture in an entry.

Amazing App

This is one of these app that are done just right. Easy to use, quick to note things in and just a delightful user experience. The latest version also added some important features like the ability to have multiple photos per post, seamless sync between multiple devices etc. Really like this app!

Direct - to the point

Reviews are wierd. Most people use it to say there is something that is also missing, even when the review is good. Well I am one of these people. It would be great if there was a timeclock tied in (maybe there is and I am not aware of it). I know it is not a time keeping device (but maybe it should be). But based on the foundation of what this program does, it is direct, and to the point, works great.

Love this. One little request.

Easy to use. Fun to write daily memo. One thing it really needs to be modifyed is; even this Day One creates an entry as blanked if I open the Day One from title bar. It is annoying.

Good app, but needs to STOP CRASHING.

Day one is a beautiful app, I’ll give them that. They did journaling right in nearly every aspect, except for one. If you put out a journal app, it absolutely NEEDS to be stable. It’s a must, no excuses. There is nothing more infuriating then typing up 1000 words, revising it and perfecting it, only to make one “wrong” click and have everything dissapear. It is absolutely maddening and happens far too frequently. Secondly, my iPhone app refuses to sync with the rest of my devices, which is also very annoying. But not as annoying as the horrible crashes which just destroy any creative impulse I might have. FIX THIS.

need to bundle up the mobile app with mac app

I purchased both apps with the same apple id, but they created two account ids for me. So I have to contact support to snyc entries on my cell phone and laptops.

Great Diary app

I have this app on my Mac, my iPad, & my iPhone. It syncs between all of them well It has an easy clean format. It’s the best diary app I have come across.

Concerned about security

A great journal is for your most PRIVATE thoughts. A blog is for your public thoughts. This is more like a limited access blog. Limited becuase the user and all that access to the server can see the users thoughts and mine them for valuable marketing opportunities. Not saying they do, just saying that can wihtout good security and encryption. Would switch from Day One when security and encryption is addressed properly.

Very Versatile

I have this app on my Mac, iPhone and iPad. If you like to keep a diary or a personal journal you can’t beat this app for convenience because its alway available on all my devices. It syncs immediately and seamlessly and I have even used it to “transfer” my important thoughts that I jot down on my iPhone and later transfer it to my mac. I know I can do this with built in “Notes” app but to me its a little more convenient because I use Day One all the time on my phone. Its also great for taking a photo on your phone, importing it to Day One and writing thoughts you have on that photo before you forget. Of course I use it also for my daily diary entry and I love the notification you get of an entry from “a year ago today” and “two years ago today”.

The best yet

I have been through many journal apps. Years ago it was Max Journal that worked so well. When they stopped supporting it, I went to Day One and stayed there, slightly disappointed that I couldn’t use multiple pictures. I did workarounds for awhile. The new version has really helped me to journalize more fully. It is a joy using multiple photos and picts to tell the stories of each day. It has made the act of reflecting so much richer. Thank you for the new Day One. Bravo!

Favorite app

Bought this on iOS and MacOS, it has become one of my favorite apps! Best part of this app is that it provides an outlet to record your life. Im a bit introverted so where I normally would post to twitter or facebook to memorialize something, I now go here. While the rest of the world doesnt get to see everything in my life, I enjoy it so much more. I hope one day to pass this archive on to my family members. So many apps you think "If only it did this..." but there is none of that with this app. Just does everything well!

Best in class

DayOne 2.0 really is a best-in-class journaling app, hands down. Functionality, design, Mac and iOS sync, all work seamlessly. It is simple yet powerful, full-featured, and, well, it really just works. Other options exist, but fall short on one or another count. DayOne does what it sets out do with class, sophistication, and an ease of use that allows the user to do just what he or she has set out to do — journal, write, record, remind, and it does this without getting in the way. If you are reading this, you are considering such an app, and you have now found the one. There is no need to spend more time deliberating, it’s time to get down to business. The price reflects the quality, and is well worth it. DayOne is a resounding YES. (And no, I do not work for them, I have received nothing in return save an amazing app that does more than you would expect from an app of its class.)

Journaler’s delight

I have been journaling since college in one way or another. This gives me the freedom to do it on the go. Do not need pen and paper just my phone. It’s easy and well worth the money if you enjoy this type of expression. If you are not sure, start w a smaller investment of just he iphone app. It’s only $5.00. Try it out! That’s how I started then fully upgraded to the full version. For me, it was a great investment!

Indispensible App

There are a few apps that I keep in the Dock (and usually open all day)—this is one of them. I wrote most of my entries in the iOS version of Day One. I use the Mac app for reference most of the time, but I also use it for adding more to entries I started in the iOS app. Itll be interesting to see if the new Handoff support in this update changes this behavior for me. Speaking of new features in this release, I love that they added Markdown checkboxes. I have a "Temp" journal with numerous bulleted lists for "to do" items. Ill convert them to checkboxes and start using this between iOS and Mac to check off items Ive completed. Overall, Im glad that the developers of this app continue to update it and add new features.

Easy to use, sync is flawless, formatting could be improved

Use this every day and find it easy. V2 synching is flawless. My only complaint is that the formatting could be improved: If you want to have a question in italics, for example and the answer also includes a few words in italics, the whole answer will be italicized. This is a nit, however, and would definitely not keep me from buying the app. Would also like to be able to re-size photos, but again, a “nice to have” not a requirement for me. I do use this every day and I really like it a lot.

Best journalling app I’ve ever used

I used to use Microsoft Word then Apple’s Pages for my journal. I had no idea how much I was missing once I switched to Day One. Switching was rather time-consuming because I had to copy and paste the entires then manually set the date, location, etc. However, it was well worth it. Being able to separate my work and personal journals, add photos, tags, locations, being able to write an entry on my Mac or my iPhone and having them synced together, it’s all great! I used to sometimes go for many weeks without making an entry but Day One reminds me. I also love how it lets me know about past entries from the same day of the year. Reading over those old entries is great and heck, it’s part of the reason I starting keeping a journal in the first place. I can’t imagine going back to a word processor. Day one is THE app for journaling.

Getting better

This app takes a lot of getting used to as it uses Markup language instead of what you are used to with Word or Pages. There aren’t good, clear instructions on how to use it, you just poke around and search the website. There is a lot more written stuff about version 1 than version 2, although you eventually learn that all of the Markup documentation for Version 1 is the same for Version 2. One total aggravation about Markup is that it is rather limited. For instance, you can bold or italicize but you can’t underline. Email tech support is slow and mostly you get answers like, “This will be addressed in a future version." However, the longer I use it the more I like it. It still has two large problems. (1) Syncing your journal makes it not private so you have to trust Day One with your personal life. (2) The automatic header info for the location and weather of your journal entry is hit and miss. Mostly miss for the rural locations where I write my entries. UPDATE: Version 2.1 is better and the improvements are making this app quite good. I have also had a couple of very helpful exchanges with tech support and give them 5 stars. Since my original review, I have also started using the iOS app and it is very good on both the iPhone and iPad. Every release makes Day One easier to use. Automatic headers for location work fine if you are in a populated area, but they don’t work well in rural locations. If you are in a rural spot, you have to pick your location from the map (in order for it to be accurate) and then edit the date or time in order to pick up the weather data.
