Used to be one of my favourite apps. The team used to come up with consistent, feature (or bug fix) rich and timely updates. This is NOT the case anymore. A few tangible issues I’ve experienced so far are: - End to End encryption is still missing. This makes it unsafe to use the sync feature and renders using more than one app inpractical & redundant. (This was a promised feature for 2.1) - DayOne sync is insecure, slow and not dependable. - Drag and drop features are problematic. If you use multiple journals, drag and drop will not work. - Encountered random app shutdown twice during composing new entries. Content was lost. I still believe in the great potential of DayOne. Until the issues are fixed, however, purchase and use at your own risk.
I like journaling to write down my thoughts and keep track of different things in my life. I’ve always kept a journal for this purpose. It helps me think and get things out in front of me. I’ve used several journaling apps through the years and some of them have hit way below my expectations. I was aprehensive at first about buying the pro version of Day One because I wasn’t sure that the app would really live up to my standards. I used the free version of the app for a while and decided to take the plunge. I was NOT disappointed AT ALL. This app delivers everything I could want. I like that it has the feature of adding tags to the entries and automatically adds the weather and location. These are nice features to have added to my entries without effort from me. I love the way the app looks. It is very modern and clean looking. Something about the way the app looks helps me feel more relaxed and want to sit and write in it. I like that I can attach photos to my entries, especially since I’m a photographer/videographer. I like spicing up my entries with photos, etc. I really like the fact that I can sync my journal on multiple devices now. I use an iPad Pro in addition to my iMac, so now I can have my journal anywhere. The only thing that would make this app better is if I could attach videos. That’s the only improvement that I could see for this journal app. Besides that, this app is perfect!
I’ve been using Day One for about 2 years now (since I got my first MacBook Pro) and I have to be honest - I didn’t journal as much as I would like to over those 2 years. I have about 60 entries over 2 years, but they were 60 meaningful entries and I love looking back through them. The design of the app was excellent and it was truly a joy to use. With the new update, they’ve taken a successful, great formula and tweaked it and made it even better. The Mac app is an excellently designed journal and is well worth the current 19.99 price tag. I’d buy it now though - it’s going to go up to 39.99 in one week. For even better journaling, the iOS app is well designed and useful as well. And I LOVE being able to have multiple journals and add up to 10 photos per entry. Well done guys, glad to support the app. Update: Still using it and since the update to Day One 2, I’ve been journaling even more and it is genuinely a joy to use. Great app.
I’ve used several over the years and Day One is by far the best, easiest to use and most flexible. I appreciate the oompatibility across all my Apple devices too
I journal a couple of times a week (on a goog week) for health and fitness reasons. Had previously used Mariner Software’s MacJournal. While that was fine software, I found it to have too many features that got in the way of journaling. The strength of Day One is its simplicity. Open the app and you have a list of recent entries. Hit the + button and you’re in a new entry. App supports Markdown for basic headings and lists, as well as hashtags for tagging. It’s just dead simple. One niggling feature that has been improved is the adding of favorites to geo-locating of entries. Nice to have entries written at my home pinned to the correct address as oppsed to a general range of house numbers. Really, the only thing I want to see added to the program is custom writing prompts. They have a feature for “inspirational qutoes on lock screen.” And I’d like to see some way to customize these qutoes with qutoes or prompts of your own form a plain text file. If you’re looking for a program that makes it easy to start journaling with solid features for organizing entries after the fact, you really can’t go wrong with this program.
Capturing entries real time is easy. The sync work works well. The app makes journaling easy.
I only needed about two days to figure out that this product goes way beyond expectations. It has a beautiful layout. Syncing is flawless and instant. I’m re-committed to jounaling more often, thanks to Day One 2. It’s also a great database for notes and ideas. I love the activity tracking capabilities. It even knows what song you are playing on your iPhone! My wife is not a techie, but she was impressed enough by Day One 2 to also want to give it a try. I know it’s a little pricey, but it’s worth it.
For some reason if you have a ram disk set up for your user cache the app will not sync over icoud correctly. Removing the ram disk makes it work fine. So far not a problem we will see.
I absolutely love this app. I use it on both my phone and computer and always have my journal entries synced. In their latest update, they added Handoff, which made it that much better to start on another device and finish it here or continue editing a post on the go if I have to leave my computer. I highly recommend this app and think the developers do a great job. It is definitely worth the money for a quality app that records your favorite memories.
This is a wonderful app. I use it on my MAC daily I have had the app for about 3 months now and I just absolultely love that I can journal as much as I want and vent my thoughts out for the day.
I’ve loved Dayone since day one of it being released. I never had issue with the dropbox sync and I journaled more than I ever had before. It worked awesome writing on my phone and then finishing an entry on my ipad or computer. When Dayone2 came out I knew that the sync option had changed and they said end-to-end encryption was coming. I bought the mac app and also the iphone app. I want to support their development efforts but for now the app is crippled because it lacks the one feature I really care about to use it the way I used the old version. I don’t think its a negative to want complete privacy around what may be some of your most intimate thoughts, so for now I give the app 3 stars as it really is a great app but limited for my use
All I can say is that this is the best journaling app out there. They don’t stop adding features which is awesome. So if you are getting this you can know their will be imporovements from the time you buy it wrapped with all the good it comes with now. Enjoy!
Day One does journaling well. Quick and easy to make entries. So getting in the habit of tracking life daily doesn’t get in the way of living. I like the clean interface and with each version it seems to get better. There are a couple oddities that I don’t care for: The location as determined by the app/computer is close but not always correct. I am at my desk for journaling most days, yet if I didn’t fix the location entry, the map would show me all over the neighborhood. So I’m just used to shortcutting in my actual location most of the time. The time and date stamp is timezone sensitive, which sounds like a good thing at first, but what that means is that when I write an entry in Central Time and then travel into Eastern Time, all of a sudden the time stamp displays the original time translated into the new time zone. Yeah, annoying at best. I’m assure that the real time stamp is still in the system. If those things were fixed, I’d give Day One 5 stars. As is, I do very much recommend it to anyone wanting to journal. I’ve tried some other ways to keep a journal on a computer and nothing works as easily as Day One.
I bought a new Macbook, and went to “DayOne” to install the app I’ve owned for years. I clicked on the price, confident it would download for free once iTunes realized I had already purchased “DayOne”. But no… I was charged $39 for a new version that I don’t need; the old version was changed to DayOne Classic (tricky). No big deal if Apple had refunded me. They would not. If you’re going to create a new version of a product instead of allowing us all to update (which is frustrating in and of itself), at least have the courtesy to give it a new name or a 2.0 or something to prevent this happening. Thanks.
As a writer, I’m always thinking. But it’s usually for work that I get paid for. When I am trying to work something out in my life and in my head, I need a secure place. Yes, I pay a therapist. Yes, she helps. But writing down what I am feeling - well, that needs to be done as well to progress. And, Day One (especially the new version) is a great place to do that. I like the multiple journals (really missed that in the original) — and most of all being able to add more than one photograph to each entry. I can stay organized - throw away the pads I used to work things out - that would have to be shreaded (like the pages I’ve written and rejected) - and just - well - write. And, I really like that everything syncs to all platforms - I use two different computers not to mention ipad and iphone. Only one thing that I would really like - a wider choice of fonts — and, perhaps, a way to color the pages, not just for mood, but to further show that I’m doing something different from what I get paid to write! I recommend everyone go for it -
I am glad I found the app because it solved a problem. I don’t use it for myself personally but for my home business. I keep notes about clients on it using the tags to identify individual needs, solutions and some conversations that help me think about upcoming issues. I just click on the tags and have history for issues, can calculate how much something is coming up etc. I even paste emails into some of the modules. I also have a tab called, “todays notes” which addresses my own progress, questions and solutions. it is easy to use and populates on all 4 of my devices, so I can always make a note.
When it first came out, I liked it for being so simple. Just text presented in a clean, crisp way. Then tagging was added, pretty cool. But when the feature to add pictures got implemented, I was getting worried it was going to be a bloatware. But my fear was unfounded when DayOne 2.0 came out. Still clean, crisp, and optimized. Now you can create more than one journal, big big plus. Worth the purchase of DayOne 2.0. Fantastic work, folks.
I’ve used Day One for a few years. I’m currently in the midst of a 6-12 month road trip and am using it to journal my trip and thoughts while wandering and hiking. I’ve tried a number of other apps and keep coming back to Day One.
DayOne sets the bar for journal apps. It’s simple to use design is intuitive and easy to use.
